We know why Mohammedans will not make images of animals or human beings; it is because the Prophet forbade them to do so. We know why orthodox Jews will not eat hare; it is because the Mosaic Law declares that the hare is unclean. Such prohibitions, when accepted, belong to positive morality; but in their origin, at any rate when their origin is known, they belonged to private morality.

* a brief comment:
It is well known that people in ancient times both cherished and feared nature, and that most of them held religious feelings.
Today, we live in an age of advanced science, and although we, like the ancients, both cherish and fear nature, our way of thinking about religion differs significantly from that of ancient people.
Superstitions still persist to some extent, but most modern people do not accept religions that reject science. However, among Christian fundamentalists in the United States, there are still many who deny science, and President Trump appears to be heavily influenced by them.
In Japan, where only about one percent of the population is Christian, many of President Trump's statements and actions, for example, his recent remark that "starting from June 4 this year, a uniform 50% tariff will be imposed on all countries around the world", are hard for most people to understand or sympathize with. If nearly half of the American people genuinely support Trump, it is frankly a little frightening.
