There is considerable individual variation in the breadth of people's capacity for love. Some are able to love only themselves, while others can extend their affection as far as their family or close friends. There are even those, like Dr. Albert Schweitzer, who embrace all of humanity with compassion.
The scope of such love carries particular significance for those in public positions. Among politicians, for instance, there are those who behave as if they care deeply for the entire population, though in reality such displays are often nothing more than superficial performance. Of course, it would be unfair to single out politicians. Similar tendencies can also be observed among members of certain new religious movements, where attachment to money or power often outweighs genuine concern for others. Sadly, many people continue to be deceived and suffer both psychological and financial harm as a result.
On the other hand, love for others is not determined solely by innate disposition, it can also deepen and expand through life experience. In particular, having children, that is, becoming a parent, often provides a natural opportunity to develop empathy and concern for beings beyond oneself.
From this perspective, it is only natural that many parents hope that politicians involved in educational policy, as well as bureaucrats responsible for educational administration, will show genuine care and interest in the children and young people who are learning and growing. In reality, however, not all those in such positions possess these qualities. While bureaucrats are often faceless and anonymous, making it difficult to identify individuals, it is not hard to think of politicians who clearly fall short in this regard. That such individuals hold considerable power over the future direction of our nation's education is a reality that cannot help but provoke a sense of alarm.
